The Transall C-160 was designed to perform cargo, troop transport and medical evacuation missions.
It was initially developed to meet the requirements for a modern transport aircraft for the French and German Air Forces. The C-160 military transport aircraft was jointly developed and produced by West German and French companies. In 1959 a Transporter Allianz consortium was formed (TRANSALL). A new tactical aircraft was required to carry 16 tones of cargo or 93 troops. It was also required that the aircraft could operate on semi-prepared airstrips. The new aircraft made its first flight in 1963. Production started in 1965. First production aircraft were delivered in 1967. Originally this cargo aircraft was intended for French and West German Air Forces. However it has also been exported to Indonesia, South Africa and Turkey. Production has finished in 1985. A total of 214 aircraft were built. During more than 50 years of service the C-160 has provided logistical support to a number of operations.
